Sony's new A1 II flagship camera will be officially unveiled on November 19. It features the same 50-megapixel sensor as the Sony A1, a white-label A1 logo, and adopts the body design of the Sony A9 III. The camera includes a new AI smart chip for faster focusing and tracking speeds, supports CFexpress A 4.0, and offers C2PA content certification.
Additionally, the FE 28-70mm F2.0 GM lens will be launched alongside it. This lens is 530 grams lighter than Canon's RF 28-70mm F2.0, weighing approximately 900 grams. It has an 86mm filter thread and is similar in size to the FE 135 GM lens.
We discussed the new FE 28-70mm F2.0 GM in our last blog, and if the weight is real, it will be very attractive and may even attract some potential Canon users to the E mount camp.
Of course, if the rumor is true, it will mean that Sony's new A1 II is likely to cost more than $6500.
Over $6500 is enough to buy a Nikon Z8 or Canon R3 plus some very powerful lenses. Can the new A1 II, the flagship of Sony's most powerful mirrorless camera, support this price? I think there are two key upgrades. The first is the global shutter, which makes up for the few shortcomings of the previous generation A1; the second is the AI. We still don't know how the AI of this A1 II works on photos or videos, but it is obviously a major selling point for Sony this time. If these two major upgrades meet expectations, then even at a price of more than $6500, it may still be competitive.
