Nikon registered a new camera a few weeks ago, codenamed N2312. Prior to this, Nikon registered the following cameras:
N2014: Nikon Z9
N2120: Nikon Z8
N1932: Nikon Z7II
N1929: Nikon Z6II
N1710: Nikon Z7
N1711: Nikon Z6
N1933: Nikon Z5
N1912: Nikon Z50
N2121: Nikon Z30
N2016: Nikon Zfc
N2137: Nikon Zf
N2214: Nikon Z6III
N2216: Nikon ???
N2312: Nikon ???
No valid information can be obtained from the camera registration number, and any speculation based on the registration number is unreliable. Therefore, we should combine Nikon's recent new products and Nikon's possible future plans to speculate what these two new cameras are.
Nikon released the z6iii in June. This is a mid-to-high-end full-frame camera, and the main improvement is in video shooting. The previous generation model of the z6iii, the z6ii, is positioned as an all-round camera that is excellent in both photo and video shooting, so the upgrade of the z6iii in video performance is reasonable.
However, the z6iii seriously threatens the sales of the z7ii. The difference between the two cameras in terms of photography is not that big, and the price difference is also small. As of July 2024, the price of the Nikon z7ii is $2,299.95 (body only) and the price of the z6iii is $2,499.95.
Obviously, Nikon's next step is likely to be to launch a more expensive mid-to-high-end full-frame mirrorless camera. Taking all factors into consideration, the most likely one is the z7iii.
In addition to the z7iii, there is another possibility, that is, an APS-C format camera. Nikon hasn't updated any APS-C cameras since the release of the Z30. Even the APS-C lenses for the Z mount haven't been updated for a long time. It seems that only Sony and Fuji are competing in this niche market for APS-C, and Nikon and Canon don't seem to be interested. Yes, when it comes to APS-C cameras, Canon hasn't released any new products in a long time, but Canon has licensed the RF-S mount agreement, so we can at least see some new Canon lenses from Tamron and Sigma.
It just so happens that Nikon has registered two new cameras this time. If I am allowed to dream a little, I hope that the other camera will be an APS-C format camera. After experiencing Fujifilm’s crazy pricing and price increases, many people will hope for a retro-styled APS-C format camera.
At the moment, all Nikon's APS-C cameras are: Z30, Z50 and Zfc. I'm not sure what the official name of a new camera would be, maybe Z90? In any case, I hope Nikon will continue to surprise us in the second half of 2024.
