2024.04.23 Sigma announced that it will launch six RF-S mount Canon lenses. On the same day, Tamron also announced that it will launch RF-S mount Canon lenses within this year.
Canon finally opened up RF mount, which makes up for the lack of lenses for the EOS R series APS-C cameras. Although Canon has opened up the RF-S mount, the full-frame RF mount can still only choose Canon's own lenses.
What is known so far is that the lenses that Sigma will release include:
Sigma says these lenses will launch in July, 2024. As you can see, these are old lenses that Sigma has released for many years, simply replaced with the RF-S Mount. According to Canon's consistent pricing strategy, it is likely to increase the price on the existing basis. But for EOS R7 and EOS R50, I’m afraid there aren’t many choices. Either choose an adapter ring or sigma rf lenses.
Tamron has only announced one lens so far: the 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD (Model B060). As for whether there will be more subsequent shots, Tamron has not announced it.
some thoughts
Open RF-S mount is very important for Canon APS-C cameras. The lack of third-party lenses has always been a fatal flaw for Canon's APS-C cameras. When a potential APS-C buyer sees that a Sony or Nikon APS-C camera can easily pick up third-party lenses for a fraction of the price, the EOS R7 or EOS R50 doesn't seem that competitive. But things are different now. Tamron and Sigma's RF mount lenses have changed everything. This allows Canon's APS-C cameras to regain their competitiveness.
Although Canon has opened up two third-party RF lenses, Tamron and Sigma, I don’t think Canon will open up to more cost-effective third-party lens manufacturers in a short time. However, it cannot be denied that with the arrival of sigma rf lenses and tamron rf lenses, Canon's APS-C cameras will be mentioned by people again.
